Where to Book a Hotel Over Airbnb: Top Cities Revealed
What destinations offer better value at an Airbnb over a hotel, and vice versa? A new study has some answers and they may surprise you.
A recent study by Highland Cabinetry analyzed the 55 biggest tourist capitals and their living arrangements to identify the cities where hotels are the most affordable when compared to Airbnb.
The study measured average hotel prices for one night and one week and compared those to Airbnb pricing range, calculating daily and weekly differences. The study also included the number of international visitors, growth in arrivals, and number of hotels in each city to provide additional context and estimate the demand for accommodations. All data was taken from open reports by TripAdvisor, Airbnb, and Euromonitor.
Istanbul
The city where staying at a hotel saves the most money compared to Airbnb is Istanbul, Turkey, with $1,490 saved weekly. The hotel room for one will cost $344 a week and there are over 7,000 hotels to choose from. At the same time Airbnb in Istanbul costs $262 for a night, summing up to $1,834 weekly and making accommodations a significant expense.
Las Vegas
Las Vegas, United States ranks second, with $1,474 difference between hotel room and Airbnb. Hotel for one here costs less than $100 but there are 375 hotels to choose from for both cheaper and more luxurious options. Las Vegas also has the priciest Airbnb accommodations, $307 on average, which makes hotel a much more affordable option.
Amsterdam
Amsterdam, Netherlands takes third place, saving $1,093. The average hotel price in Amsterdam totals $131 for a night, while Airbnb costs over 2 times more at $287. There are 1,366 hotels in the capital of the Netherlands, amounting to the second-highest rate of hotels per capita in the Top 10.
Sydney
Sydney, Australia closely follows Amsterdam with fourth place and $1,056 in savings. Airbnb prices in Sydney are a little cheaper than in Amsterdam, $247 for one-night stay. Compared to Airbnb, expenses total only $96 on average, same as in Las Vegas.
Paris
Paris, France is fifth in the ranking of the cities where it is cheapest to live in a hotel rather than in Airbnb, with $995 in savings. The city has over 2,700 hotels with 130.8 hotels per 100,000 residents, the highest density in the top-10. One night in a hotel here will cost $126 and Airbnb offers places for $268 on average.
Dubai
Dubai, United Arab Emirates takes sixth place, with $961 saved. The city has fewer hotels than Paris with 2,177 but the prices are more affordable, with $71. Airbnb prices in Dubai are also cheaper on average than in Sydney or Amsterdam, summing up to $208.
Miami
In seventh place is Miami, United States, with $887 saved weekly. The city has the highest hotel prices in the list, averaging $152 for the night. At the same time Airbnb accommodations cost less than in Las Vegas or Amsterdam.
Antalya
Antalya, Turkey ranks eighth, with $828 saved weekly. Just like Istanbul, the city saw a large growth of tourists, 29% compared to last year. The city offers 1,263 hotels and room prices come to $46 on average.
Tokyo
Tokyo, Japan is ninth, letting tourists save $826 on accommodations. The city has the cheapest hotel options in the list, with the one-night stay costing only $42. Tokyo has over 2,900 hotels, providing accommodations for tourists who are visiting Tokyo more often. The city saw a 4% increase in international visitors since last year.
Hamburg
Hamburg, Germany closes the ranking of the cities where it is cheapest to stay in a hotel rather than in Airbnb, with tenth place and $794 in savings. International arrivals to Hamburg grew 5%, more than for Tokyo, Miami or Sydney, totalling 1,450,000 people. Tourists can find a hotel room in Hamburg for $82 on average, while Airbnb accommodations will cost $195.
