Washington, DC to Host WorldPride 2025
Get ready LGBTQ+ revelers in the United States. Washington, DC will host WorldPride in 2025! Yeah, we know you’re probably thinking about Sydney WorldPride 2023, but we’re excited that the global event will make a return to the US after New York hosted the global event in 2019.
The exciting news comes after InterPride, an international association of over 400 Pride organizations representing more than 70 countries, selected the Capital Pride Alliance (CPA) to host WorldPride 2025, after former host city Kaohsiung City, Taiwan withdrew its bid. It would have been the first city in East Asia to host a WorldPride celebration. Unfortunately, Kaohsiung Pride withdrew its bid, and now, the nation’s capital will reap the coveted honor as a WorldPride host city.
Executive Director of Capital Pride Alliance, Ryan Bos, expressed the honor bestowed upon the CPA to host WorldPride 2025 and for the opportunity to share the best of the Washington, DC region with visitors around the world.
“WorldPride provides an expansive platform to further fight for civil and human rights by inspiring changemakers, while collectively celebrating the achievements, diversity, and resilience as a local, national, and global community,” said Bos in a press release.
The details for the two-week-long event – with the proposed dates of May 22 to June 8, 2025 – have yet to be finalized, of course, but organizers say it will feature an innovative slate of cultural programs to highlight and bring visibility to the District’s LGBTQ+ community. including a Human Rights Conference in addition to partner events to celebrate the 34th anniversary of DC Black Pride, Trans Pride, Latinx Pride, AAPI Pride, Silver Pride, and Youth Pride – all partnering with Capital Pride to “shine a spotlight and bring visibility to the District’s LGBTQ+ community.
Washington, DC will not only host its first WorldPride event, but it will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Pride celebration held in the city.
Mayor Muriel Bowser welcomed the good news on Twitter: “Pride in DC is a manifestation of our DC values—an opportunity for people to celebrate themselves & the diversity of our community. What better way to celebrate 50 years of Pride in DC than with the largest LGBTQ+ event in the world. See you at the pride of our lifetime in 2025.”
More details are expected to be announced in the coming months. To stay posted on any upcoming updates, visit DC WorldPride 2025’s official website at www.worldpridedc.com.
