The U.S. Will Reopen Borders to Vaccinated Travelers in November

Travelers eager to plan a road trip across the border to Canada or Mexico can resume their vacation plans. The U.S. will reopen its land borders to nonessential travel next month after a 19-month halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All international travelers must be fully vaccinated.

Both Mexico and Canada have pressed the U.S. to ease restrictions on travel that have separated families and stopped all leisure trips since the onset of the pandemic. This move follows last month’s announcement that the U.S. will end country-based travel bans for air travel but require vaccination for foreign nationals seeking to enter by plane.

Both policies will take effect in early November. So, if you’re crossing the border by car, rail, and ferry, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officers will ask travelers their vaccination status. During a secondary screening process, travelers will have their proof of vaccination verified.

The U.S. will accept travelers who have been fully vaccinated with any of the vaccines approved for emergency use by the World Health Organization, including the AstraZeneca vaccine used in Canada.
