Same-Sex Couples Can Say ‘I Do’ in Mexico State!

Queer couples looking to get married now have another destination wedding option in Mexico. The State of Mexico, which surrounds Mexico City, has approved same-sex marriages and same-sex common-law marriages! It’s not only the country’s largest state, but it’s also the 29th state to allow gay couples to say, “I do.”

According to USA Today, only three of Mexico’s 32 states have not made tying the knot legal for same-sex couples. So, that includes Tamaulipas (located on the northern border), Tabasco (located on the Gulf coast), and Guerrero (located in the south). And Tabasco’s President Andres Manuel Lopez has shown no desire to make that progressive change. But legislators in Mexico State say it’s a positive move toward equality.

State Legislator Paola Jimenez says: “Today, by becoming the 29th state to approve equal marriage, we will be reducing inequality, and letting the country know that in the State of Mexico we do not leave anybody behind.”

So what are the top Latin American countries that have legalized same-sex marriages? Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina are paving the way to make LGBTQ+ rights a priority even though there is always room for improvement.

Aside from Mexico State, are you looking for another place in Mexico to get married? Consider queer-friendly Puerto Vallarta or its laid-back mellow cousin, Punta Mita!
