Palm Springs Escape: Ghost Towns, Glamour, and Good Times
This year, our annual road trip from Las Vegas to Palm Springs was filled with beautiful desert views, historic stops, and some surprises.
There is something magical about traditions, especially those tied to travel. One of my favorite annual traditions is our road trip from Las Vegas from my travel conference to Palm Springs for Anne’s annual concert. The journey through the Mojave Desert offers breathtaking views of the rugged desert terrain framed by majestic mountains—a perfect backdrop to our adventure.
A Timeless Stop: Goodsprings, Nevada
On our way, we made a detour to a ghost town called Goodsprings, Nevada. Just 30 minutes outside Las Vegas, it feels like stepping into another era. The Pioneer Saloon, an old-time establishment brimming with history, was the highlight of our stop. This charming saloon offers a glimpse into the past, with its vintage decor and storied walls. If you’re traveling between Las Vegas and Palm Springs, I highly recommend stopping by for lunch and soaking up the nostalgic atmosphere.
A New Experience in Palm Springs
Our trips to Palm Springs usually involve renting a house, but this year, we opted for something new: the stunning, newly opened Thompson Hotel. Nestled in the heart of town, this luxurious retreat masterfully combines mid-century modern design with contemporary elegance. Its central location makes it a perfect base for exploring Palm Springs’ vibrant dining, shopping, and cultural scene.
The hotel itself is an experience. We stayed in a corner suite featuring a wraparound balcony with panoramic mountain views and a cozy fireplace, perfect for those chilly desert nights. The on-site amenities were exceptional—a chic rooftop pool with sweeping vistas and gourmet dining options that delighted our taste buds. By night, the hotel bar came alive with a live DJ, creating a lively and festive atmosphere.
Making Memories
Our days were filled with boutique shopping and savoring incredible meals with friends. The trip culminated in my wife Anne Steele’s concert at Toucans Tiki Lounge, a fun venue that never disappoints. The energy of the evening was the perfect highlight of our Palm Springs tradition.
Looking ahead, I’m already planning for next year. Mark your calendars for November 15, 2025, when Anne’s show returns to Palm Springs. This time, I’m organizing a group stay at the Thompson Hotel to make it an unforgettable event. If you’d like to join us, reach out via email at kelli@kelligreggtravel.com. Let’s make next year’s tradition even more special with a new Gig Trip!
Final Thoughts
Palm Springs continues to be a destination that inspires and delights with its unique blend of natural beauty, history, and modern luxury. Whether it’s exploring hidden gems like the Pioneer Saloon or indulging in the Thompson Hotel’s refined offerings, this journey reminds me why I cherish this tradition so much.
