Malena Belafonte Dazzles With Talent Showcase at Sony Hall
On December 18, Malena Belafonte’s Boudoir transformed Sony Hall into a stunning world of fashion, theater, and performance, in front of a sold-out audience.
Directed, produced, and choreographed by Malena Belafonte, daughter-in-law of legendary singer Harry Belafonte (and co-produced by Belafonte’s son, David, who is married to Malena), the evening combined fashion, music, and storytelling into an immersive evening of creativity in the heart of Manhattan’s Times Square.
The event was a multigenerational family affair for the Belafontes, with granddaughter Sarafina Belafonte as assistant choreographer, and singer premiering her original single “Wandering Eye. Grandson Amadeus Belafonte delivered a heartfelt vocal performance and together, these gorgeous young talents continue the music legacy of their trailblazing grandfather.
For the fashion component, the runway bisected the hall and featured a dazzling array of couture designs from Heike NY, Aforieke, Hermione Elma, and collections curated by Style by Rahel, with contributions from Warlock JP, The Confessional Showroom, John Ashford, Mieux Swimwear, and John Ash Alive Shoes. The creations ranged from cutting-edge couture to casual streetwear, all with a distinct NYC vibe.
Weaving the evening together were four elegant dance routines by Malena and ballroom choreographer partner Krisi Dalipi. Their fluid grace was the thread that united all the chapters of the evening, and a standout was the dance to Adele’s “Chasing Pavements,” which showcased their newly-formed Dancing with the Stars Europe alumniship.
A deeply moving tribute honored the late designer Corey Woods, who lost his battle with stage 4 colon cancer in June. He was a cherished collaborator and close friend of Malena, who paid tribute to him with runway featuring his final Yeroc collection, accompanied by an emotional rendition of “I Will Cover You (Reprise)” by Amadeus Belafonte. This was a highlight of the night and we look forward to more from Amadeus.
Other highlights included burlesque star Pearls Daily, Hannah Akussa Richardson of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and the ensemble of diverse and talented fashion models who strutted their stuff with charm and rizz. Guests chatted with each other and supped on a set menu of steak, seafood, and cheesecake, accompanied by a selection of wine and the fun continued at the afterparty until 2 am. It was a celebration of the best of New York in an iconic venue.
