M-Powerment Summit Kicks Off Pride in Oakland

According to UCLA Williams Institute School of Law’s Black LGBT Adults in the US report published in 2021, Black LGBT adults are more likely to experience economic insecurity than Black non-LGBT adults, and Black LGBT adults face disparities in mental and physical health, such as depression, asthma, and disability. It also states that over one-quarter (26%) of Black LGBT adults have been diagnosed with depression compared to 15% of Black non-LGBT adults.

According to their Latinx LGBT Adults in the US report, Latinx LGBT adults are more likely to be unemployed and to experience food insecurity than non-LGBT Latinx adults and, like Black LGBTQ adults, face many disparities in mental and physical health such as depression, asthma, and chronic health conditions. The report states that nearly one-third (30%) of Latinx LGBT adults have been diagnosed with depression, compared to 16% of Latinx non-LGBT adults.

With these stats in mind, it’s easy to recognize the importance of something like the M-Powerment Summit in Oakland, California on June 3, 2023. The San Francisco Bay area, which includes Oakland, is already known as one of the most Queer-friendly places in the country, and a fabulous choice for Queer-friendly family vacations. Now, with the M-Powerment Summit, it can now also be known as a place that empowers Black, Lantix and other Queer people of color.

The Oakand LGBTQ Community Center’s support group Black Connect & Latinx group – PowerX, invites GBTQ and SGL men of color, to help kick-off Pride Month and National Men’s Health Month. The M-Powerment Summit a weekend health and wellness summit, featuring guest speakers, insightful and educational workshops, empowering affinity group sessions, fun activities and male bonding in “The Town”.

Social events will take place Friday through Sunday (June 2nd – 4th). The FREE M-Powerment Summit will take place Saturday, June 3, at the Oakland Marriott City Center in downtown Oakland.
