Vacationer wanted to provide some travel inspiration to get queer travelers thinking about planning trips to some of the best travel destinations to visit in 2024. So, we decided to offer our short list of places to go from Curaçao to Wellington, New Zealand.
Our list not only highlights something LGBTQ+-related in each destination, but we also wanted to make sure that each place is safe for queer folks to visit. Whether it is traveling for a festive global event or visiting a place that finally recognizes our rights, we hope you immerse yourself in one or more of these queer-friendly destinations in the upcoming year.
Costa Rica
In Costa Rica, visitors can find inner peace amid pristine white and black sand beaches along the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean. The iconic Arenal Volcano stands as a majestic backdrop in La Fortuna, known for rejuvenating hot springs like Tabacón. The renowned Madrid Pride festivities stand as one of the world’s best, signifying Madrid’s acceptance and love for all. The week-long celebration commences on June 28, International Pride Day, and continues with a blend of political activism, unique events, and festive activities. The pinnacle of the festivities is the grand Madrid Pride Parade, a profound LGBTQ+ political demonstration that takes place on the first Saturday of July, marked by floats and music.
Madrid’s LGBTQ+ nightlife thrives in the heart of Chueca, where bars and clubs like Hot, Strong, and Bears Bar, provide a welcoming environment. Revitalized by the LGBTQ+ community, this neighborhood offers an atmosphere of respect and camaraderie. You can explore iconic venues like Museo Chicote and Libertad 8, known for their history and lively nightlife.
Additionally, there are a multitude of newer establishments, from Vuélvete Loca to LL Showbar, displaying some of the area’s most fun drag performances. Newport, Rhode Island
A city brimming with history and charm, Newport invites visitors to journey through time with every step. As you wander its streets and bask in the coastal beauty, you will discover 18 National Historic Landmarks that reveal the rich tapestry of Newport’s past. From the magnificent Isaac Bell House, highlighting shingle-style architecture to the French chateau-inspired opulence of The Elms—Newport’s heritage comes alive.
Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes chose the Newport Mansions as the backdrop for his historical drama The Gilded Age. Osaka, Japan
The upcoming year is an exciting one for Osaka, as The International LGBTQ+ Travel Association (IGLTA) has chosen Osaka, Japan as the location for their 2024 Global Convention, marking the organization’s first convention in Asia.
Osaka is celebrated for its warm hospitality and rich culinary culture, and it boasts the second-largest LGBTQ+ community outside Tokyo. In recent years, Pride Month has seen significant growth all over Japan, with businesses and tourism operators showing their support for the LGBTQ+ community. The Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau (OCTB) has led the way by launching a Pride campaign, affirming its commitment as Asia’s premier LGBTQ+-friendly city.
As part of the Pride festivities in 2023, W Osaka, collaborated with the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection to offer a special rainbow-themed Pride Afternoon Tea set. Osaka boasts over a hundred LGBTQ+ bars, including the popular Frenzy-Frenzy and Explosion nightclub as well as a burgeoning trans nightlife scene.
The city has initiated various LGBTQ+-friendly initiatives, such as Destination Marketing Organization-led Pride Month campaigns and the Open Arms Project, showcasing Osaka’s commitment to being a welcoming destination.
Rovinj, Croatia
Looking for a more laid-back vacation? Head to the Istrian peninsula in Croatia! Rovinj is an adorable fishing port on the west coast of Istria. This LGBTQ+-friendly destination offers its narrow streets, friendly faces, and a refreshingly slow pace. Think beautiful pristine beaches. Visitors can also explore the city’s history, dating to the 5th century, showcasing its journey from a maritime economy to a thriving town.
The heart of the town, marked by St. Euphemia Church, picturesque terraces, and the artistic ambiance of Grisia Street, makes it one of the most romantic Mediterranean towns. Climb to the top of the church for one of the most stunning views in all of Croatia. Historic streets, stone houses, art galleries, and museums add to its charm.
Elegant palaces from the 18th and 19th centuries highlight the town’s prosperity. Hotel Adriatic, established in one such palace in 1913, remains a cultural hub. The town’s lively mornings at Caffe Adriatic mirror the Mediterranean lifestyle. The Marais features a range of LGBTQ+-friendly establishments, distinguished by the rainbow symbol, offering delectable dining experiences, from traditional Parisian brasseries to haute cuisine restaurants. However, the charm of Paris extends beyond the Marais, as this cosmopolitan city caters to various tastes and preferences.

This diverse city invites visitors to explore artistic treasures, picturesque islands, and world-class dining for an unforgettable experience.

The pinnacle of these celebrations will be the EuroPride parade on the final day, June 29th, set amidst the historic city center, with the iconic White Tower illuminated in the colors of the rainbow.
Under the banner of “Persevere, Progress, Prosper,” EuroPride 2024 seeks to acknowledge the challenges faced by the LGBTI community, celebrate the strides made in LGBTI inclusion, and illuminate a vision of a promising and prosperous future. Additionally, Thessaloniki boasts high-quality services and captivating nearby destinations, including the historic city itself and the stunning Halkidiki beaches, along with natural wonders like Mount Olympus. More attractions in this wonderful city include the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, the Museum of Byzantine Culture, the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki, the historic Ladadika District, and the stunning Aristotelous Square, considered the “Jewel of Thessaloniki.”
Vienna, Austria
For those who love sports and culture, EuroGames Vienna 2024 is Europe’s largest LGBTIQ+ sports event, offering diverse competitions, and social activities on July 17-20, 2024. Celebrate diversity, equality, and inclusion in a setting that embraces both sport and individuality.
In a recent report published by IGLTA, Shaping the Future of LGBTQ+ Tourism in Europe, Vienna was mentioned as an example of the increase in support for the LGBTQ+ community in Central and Eastern Europe. The report notes, “Many countries in this area, despite their historical and cultural backgrounds, have seen a surge in backing from both individuals and businesses. One striking example of this support was seen in Austria during an event, which can be aptly described as a “rainbow explosion” in Vienna. During this event, rainbow flags adorned every building.”
Vienna, nestled along the Danube River in eastern Austria, the capital city, boasts a rich artistic and intellectual heritage influenced by luminaries like Mozart, Beethoven, and Sigmund Freud. The city is renowned for its many coffeehouses like Café Central, Café Sperl, Café Sacher (home to the original Sachertorte), and its opulent Imperial palaces, including Schönbrunn, the Habsburgs’ summer retreat.
In the MuseumsQuartier district, historical and contemporary structures come together to house masterpieces by artists like Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt. Do not miss The Beethoven Frieze, one of Klimt’s masterpieces, which can be found downstairs in the Secession Building.

Wellington, New Zealand
New Zealand’s capital, Wellington rests near the southernmost tip of the North Island and features a picturesque waterfront, sandy beaches, a bustling harbor, and charming timber houses on surrounding hills. The city is known for its iconic red Wellington Cable Car and “Windy Wellington” nickname due to brisk Cook Strait winds.
