IGLTA to Celebrate Its 40th Anniversary at 2023 Global Convention
Get ready for a splash of glitter and a burst of color as the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association (IGLTA) prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary in style at the 2023 Global Convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico from October 4-7. It will also mark IGLTA’s return to the Caribbean for the first time since 1985.
We asked John Tanzella, IGLTA President and CEO about the decision to host the convention in Puerto Rico and he noted, “Puerto Rico offers a unique blend of Spanish, Taino, and African heritages that are reflected in its vibrant arts, music, and cuisine. Combine this with Discover Puerto Rico’s deep commitment to diversity, and it’s the perfect combination to inspire, engage, and truly welcome our global attendees. There have been many challenges for LGBTQ+ travel in the Caribbean, so this is an opportunity to make a strong positive impact in the region and spotlight an IGLTA destination member that has been a vocal champion for queer travelers.”
Tanzella added, “We’re celebrating our 40th anniversary at the Global Convention this year, a major milestone for any organization, but even more impactful for one working for the LGBTQ+ community. Attendees can expect many surprises throughout the conference to highlight this anniversary, adding an extra level of festivity to the great networking and educational opportunities.”
IGLTA recently announced that Keshav Suri, from The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group and Keshav Suri Foundation, will receive the 2023 Pioneer Award. This award recognizes individuals, businesses, or organizations that have played a pivotal role in advancing LGBTQ+ travel. Keshav Suri’s contributions, innovation, and dedication to making LGBTQ+ travel accessible and welcoming are truly commendable. Suri’s initiatives, such as introducing gender-neutral children’s books in hotel rooms and creating LGBTQ+ inclusive nightclubs, have transformed LGBTQ+ travel in India and beyond.
Lunfarda Travel, a Buenos Aires-based travel company, is the recipient of the 2023 Impact Award. This award honors responsible tourism development and recognizes Lunfarda Travel as one of the first female, queer-owned travel companies in Argentina, setting a remarkable example of responsible tourism with a focus on diversity and inclusion. Their unique experiences, including Black History and Queer History tours, highlight often overlooked aspects of Argentina’s heritage.
For those who haven’t booked their accommodation yet, Tanzella recommends booking soon, recommending the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino, noting “if you want to be in the center of the action, the host hotel is where you need to be! It is located right across from the convention center, which is where all of the daytime programming takes place and provides additional networking opportunities because so many attendees are staying there.” A beach option for the trip is Caribe Hilton, with Aloft San Juan a little closer to the convention center.
Discover Puerto Rico, a private, not-for-profit Destination Marketing Organization (DMO), has been actively working to make Puerto Rico more welcoming to LGBTQ+ travelers since its launch in 2018. Their dedication has paid off, with an increase from 19% to 41% of LGBTQ+ travelers identifying Puerto Rico as an LGBTQ+ welcoming destination within just two years. “It is an honor to be the host destination of this historic and impactful conference,” said Leah Chandler, Chief Marketing Officer of Discover Puerto Rico. “This partnership with IGLTA is not only an acknowledgment of our efforts surrounding inclusivity for all travelers who seek the Island’s unique cultural and tourism offerings, but also a commitment to be an example to our neighbors in the Caribbean for creating environments that are welcoming to everyone, and ultimately drive positive outcomes for businesses and locals alike.”
We asked Tanzella what he is most looking forward to at this year’s convention in Puerto Rico and he said “Connecting with our amazing members and allies from around the world. When our professional community unites in person around our shared passion for inclusive travel, it is really magical. Our conference feels like a family reunion in the best possible way, and we’re always excited to welcome first-timers into the group.”
