Harry Meets Santa Daddy in a Norwegian Christmas Ad
A four-minute ad titled “When Harry met Santa” is giving us all the feels! Norway’s state-owned postal service, Posten Norge, released the festive commercial this week ahead of the holiday season. It looks like Harry snagged St. Nick as a love interest and we’re here for it.
In case you didn’t know, the commercial’s title is a nod to the 1989 movie When Harry Met Sally. It was produced to mark 50 years since the decriminalized same-sex relationships in Norway – also known for some of Europe’s most progressive LGBTQ+ legislation.
The ad stars well-known Scandinavian actors Johan Ehn as Harry and Terje Stromhdahl as Santa Daddy. Harry spots Santa delivering gifts to his home. The romance between the two blossoms when they meet each Christmas over a number of years. To spend more time with Harry, Santa gets Norway’s Posten to help with deliveries.
In a statement, the Norwegian Postal Service says, “Everyone should feel welcome, seen, heard, and included. This year’s Christmas ad embraces this.” They believe the aim was to “show love has no limits” and its reaction in Norway has been “overwhelming.”
U.S. ambassador to Denmark Rufus Gifford, who is gay himself, tweeted, “Oh man I love Scandinavia. Imagine if the US Post Office put out an ad like this.”
No word yet if there will be a continuation of Santa’s love story next year. For now, check out the heartwarming commercial. And no, we’re not crying, you’re crying!
