British Expected to Spend More Than $56 Million on Travel in 2022
Travelers in Great Britain are eagerly reaching for their passports and already planning a trip abroad next year, according to new research from American Express.
Survey respondents expect to spend an average of £1,567 ($2,158 USD) with a fifth planning to spend £2,000 ($2754 USD) or more. Much like most people, they miss traveling abroad and some just want to treat themselves. In total, Brits plan to spend £41.2 billion ($56.7 billion USD) on international trips next year.
Thirty-two percent of respondents said they are booking their travel in advance because they miss international travel. Whereas 21% of Brits are celebrating occasions they weren’t able to because of the pandemic, and 16% want to take advantage of deals offered by airlines and accommodations.
Most travelers are taking a more cautious approach and putting off booking for now. Fifty-five percent of the survey takers want to wait and see how the pandemic progresses, while a third (33%) are waiting for restrictions to ease, and 30% feel 2022 is too far away to book.
June and July are the months people have their hearts set on traveling abroad next year. Most Brits surveyed want to travel to Spain. Greece, France, Italy, and the U.S. round out the top five destinations people want to visit next year. Some have set their sights further afield, with 6% looking to go to the Caribbean and 4% contemplating a trip to China.
The research also revealed that nearly a quarter of those surveyed had not left the UK at all during the pandemic. Which explains why 34% of the respondents will plan vacations in the country because they feel more comfortable in the UK given the pandemic. Cornwall and Wales were popular travel destinations, but 25% are undecided about where to plan a trip in the UK next year.
