Out Captain Sandy Sets Sail in Malta for 7th Season of ‘Below Deck Mediterranean’
Season 7 of Below Deck Mediterranean debuts on Bravo TV with Captain Sandy Yawn, who identifies as lesbian, and her crew sailing from Grand Harbor Marina in LGBTQ+-friendly Malta.
Viewers get to sail through the pristine Mediterranean waters of Malta along with Captain Sandy on the 163-foot superyacht Home. We have to admit we’re a little envious of all the charter guests this season because this ship looks like pure heaven! Just check out the photos for yourself.
If you’re feeling antsy and want to book a voyage on this complex hybrid vessel on your own – here’s a quick reality check. Renting the superyacht for a week will set you back $245,000! Malta is one of the smallest and most historic archipelagos, with the highest number of registered mega yachts in the world.
For those who have never seen the show before, you should know that it follows the captain and the crew, providing armchair travelers with a somewhat realistic view of what the yachty life is really like, from crew members’ clashing personalities to demanding charter guests to unexpected twists that make their journey at sea difficult.
Well, this year, to ensure smooth sailing, Captain Sandy brings on a trio of new department heads, but when surprising friction in the galley intensifies between the chief stew Natasha Webb and chef David, who came onto the boat as colleagues and friends, tension permeates through the entire boat.
Meanwhile, the deck team faces an uphill battle when one crew member is unable to adapt to the high demands of Mediterranean superyachting, forcing others to pick up the slack. From difficult charter guests to roller-coaster “boatmances” and challenges with hierarchy on board, these yachties go to unthinkable lengths to survive the charter season.
And of all the new crew members, we’re in love with fun-loving second stew Kyle Viljoen, who admits to just coming out only a year before joining the crew. Viljoen said it wasn’t easy coming out in South Africa where it’s not exactly a popular thing to be gay. As a child in an all-boys school, he always hid his authentic self, which included hiding a 12-year relationship with a guy he met in high school.
He tells viewers in an on-cam confessional, “The longest relationship I’ve had was twelve years and it was always kept a secret, and keeping all that inside damaged me a lot.” But he’s moved on since then and admits that he really wants to get married and have kids. We’re rooting for him!
In addition to Captain Sandy, Kyle, and the luxury superyacht, Malta is also a major star of the reality show this season. Malta will provide viewers with an excellent opportunity to see why Malta is a favorite hub for Mediterranean yachting,” said Michelle Buttigieg, Malta Tourism Authority Representative for North America. “Exploring the Maltese islands by yacht is like sailing through 7,000 years of history. With approximately 122 miles of Coastline, Malta’s clear blue sea allows yachting guests to enjoy beautiful, secluded beaches, an abundance of reefs, stunning caverns, and caves.”
