An Iconic LGBTQ Landmark to Host ‘Matrix Resurrections’ Premiere

The Castro Theatre will host the Matrix Resurrections U.S. premiere on Saturday, Dec. 18.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Transgender director Lana Wachowski is said to be a fan of the venue. Movie stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Neil Patrick Harris are expected to walk the red carpet in front of the 1,400-seat movie palace that will celebrate its 100th-year anniversary in 2022.

Tickets for the premiere are not available to the general public, but there will be a “fan zone” near the red carpet where the public can see the film’s stars in person.

According to Variety, an inside source said the famous gayborhood and Warner Bros. are in “many discussions” with the city about the logistics of the event, including security and street closures, which would include blocking off Castro Street. Warner Bros. declined to comment on the details surrounding the premiere of the fourth installment of the “Matrix” film franchise.

What’s the movie’s connection to the city by the bay? Well, apparently several scenes from the movie were shot in San Francisco’s Financial District. Cameras were also spotted in Chinatown, North Beach, and at a downtown BART station. Some action sequences with Reeves and Moss were filmed around Montgomery and Sansome streets, too.

Even if you miss the movie premiere in the Castro, you can catch the long-awaited sequel in U.S. theaters and on the HBO Max streaming service on Wednesday, Dec. 22.
