Drag Wars Continues to Shine and Slay in the West Village
Long before drag became a cultural phenomenon, Drag Wars was carving out its place as a pivotal platform for emerging talent in New York City and it’s still going strong.
Drag Wars is weekly on Mondays at 10 pm at the historic Pieces Bar. Hosted by the iconic Shequida Hall, the regular event has launched the careers of RuPaul’s Drag Race stars like Sasha Velour, Aquaria, Monet X Change, and Bob the Drag Queen.
Founded in 2012 by the iconic Shequida, the competition has grown into a cornerstone of the city’s drag scene, offering a space for performers to refine their craft, build community, and gain recognition. For the past nine years, it has made its home at the historic Pieces Bar in Manhattan’s West Village, where it continues to spotlight the next generation of drag superstars.
Drag Wars has been instrumental in launching the careers of queens who have gone on to achieve national and international acclaim, including RuPaul’s Drag Race alumni such as Sasha Velour, Aquaria, Monet X Change, Bob the Drag Queen, Jasmine Kennedie, Lemon, Xunami, and Nymphia Wind, among many others. “Drag Wars prepares performers for the NYC drag scene and beyond,” Shequida said. “It’s not just about the competition—it’s about learning, growing, and honing your craft.”
The competition’s unique format, where winners are chosen by audience vote, creates a democratic and inclusive environment that fosters camaraderie and respect among contestants. This sense of family, coupled with Shequida’s emphasis on integrity and professionalism, has set Drag Wars apart from other competitions. “I wanted to create an opportunity I never had,” Shequida explained. “A fair, inclusive platform where performers could truly thrive.”
Pieces Bar, located on Christopher Street, offers the perfect stage for Drag Wars. Situated on the street where the gay rights movement began, just around the corner from the historic Stonewall Inn, Pieces has become a vital part of LGBTQIA+ nightlife. The bar is managed by Ruby Roo, a beloved drag queen who has worked with the venue for over 15 years. Ruby hosts her own Friday show, Frisky, making Pieces a welcoming space for the queer community and a hub for celebrating drag talent. Pieces is also part of a family of venues that includes Balcon Salon, Hardware, and Playhouse, which collectively contribute to NYC’s thriving drag and nightlife culture.
Beyond the weekly competition, Drag Wars has become a cultural phenomenon in its own right. The event has attracted celebrity attendees such as Chappell Roan, Adele, Sam Smith, and others, who have joined the vibrant audience to witness unforgettable performances. With an annual All-Stars event showcasing the best of the best, Drag Wars continues to push the boundaries of what drag can be and has solidified its place as a cornerstone of NYC’s nightlife.
Looking to the future, Shequida envisions even greater growth for Drag Wars, including partnerships with sponsors who share a commitment to drag’s global significance. “Drag represents the ultimate freedom—the freedom to be whoever, however, and whatever you choose,” she said. With its unwavering dedication to nurturing talent and celebrating individuality, Drag Wars remains a beacon of creativity, empowerment, and community.
Drag Wars takes place weekly at Pieces Bar, located at 8 Christopher Street in Manhattan. For updates and more information, visit Pieces’ website or follow Drag Wars on social media.
