7 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting My Vanlife
Gay traveler Stephen Ekstrom reflects on his vanlife adventure and offers advice he wished someone gave him before starting his epic road trip and lifestyle change.
Van life – living in a vehicle full or part-time – can be an exciting and liberating experience for many people around the globe. The freedom to explore new places and live life on one’s own terms is incredibly appealing to a variety of people regardless of their social and economic backgrounds. However, as an LGBTQ+ traveler, there are certain aspects of van life that you might not have considered beforehand. So, in an effort to pay it forward, here are a few essential tips and some insight that I wish I’d known as a gay traveler before diving into my van life adventure.
1. Research LGBTQ+-Friendly Destinations
Before hitting the road, it’s crucial to research LGBTQ+-friendly destinations along your planned route. While it’s true that progress has been made in many parts of the world regarding LGBTQ+ rights, discrimination and intolerance still exist in some places. It is imperative to identify inclusive locations. This will help you feel safe and welcomed in places that are identified as safe zones during your travels.
2. Connect with LGBTQ+ Travel Communities
The Vanlife community is vast, diverse, and (typically) inclusive. Seek out and connect with other LGBTQ+ travelers through online forums, social media groups, or LGBTQ+ travel organizations. Engaging with like-minded individuals can provide a supportive network, valuable advice, and even potential travel companions.
3. Be Prepared for Different Attitudes and Cultural Beliefs
As with any travel, you will eventually encounter people with different cultural backgrounds and beliefs. While I’ve found that most individuals are accepting and friendly, it’s important to be mentally prepared for encountering occasional ignorance, prejudice, and even hostility. Always remember that it is not a reflection of your worth or identity, but rather a reflection of their limited understanding.
4. Safety Considerations
As an LGBTQ+ traveler, your safety is a priority and there are more than likely some additional concerns you need to address before you begin your vanlife adventure. Always inform a trusted friend or family member about your travel plans and keep them updated regularly, using a GPS app, like Life360. Google Maps’ “share” feature is great for this. It’s also beneficial to familiarize yourself with local laws, customs, and attitudes toward the LGBTQ+ community in each area you visit.
5. Seek LGBTQ+-Friendly Accommodations
Finding LGBTQ+-friendly accommodations can enhance your overall travel experience. Look for hotels, guesthouses, or campgrounds that have a reputation for being inclusive and welcoming. Online platforms and apps specifically designed for LGBTQ+ travelers, such as misterb&b or Purple Roofs, can be excellent resources for finding safe places to stay.
6. Engage with Community Events and Festivals
Participating in local LGBTQ+ community events, festivals, and Pride celebrations can be a wonderful way to connect with fellow travelers and locals. These events foster a sense of belonging, celebration, and unity. They assist in creating unforgettable memories and allow you to experience the vibrant LGBTQ+ cultures of each place you visit.
7. Share Your Vanlife Experience with Others
Build a community to offer others insight into your vanlife journey Sharing your candid experiences on social media platforms can be an empowering way to document your travels and inspire others. By building an online presence, you can connect with a wider audience, including other LGBTQ+ travelers and allies. These platforms also allow you to highlight LGBTQ+-friendly destinations, accommodations, and experiences, which provide a positive impact on local communities, and it provides a trusted travel resource for queer travelers.
As an LGBTQ+ traveler, vanlife will provide you with unique opportunities for personal growth, self-discovery, and numerous ways to connect with others. The journey will likely come with its challenges. However, if you take all of the considerations listed above into account beforehand, you will have the skills to confidently navigate challenges. Again, do your homework to find LGBTQ+-friendly destinations, connect with supportive communities, engage in local events, and always prioritize safety. You can make your vanlife adventure an unforgettable experience while feeling secure and embraced as your authentic self. Always remember, your journey is not just about the places you visit but the impact you create along the way and while you’re there.
