Vacationers of the Week: Naudia Yvette Guerrero and Serena Sommino

You may know the as @unpredictabletravels_ on Instagram, but Naudia Yvette Guerrero and Serena Sommino are people we really wanted to connect with for our weekly franchise, Vacationer of the Week. Naudia was born and raised in San Diego, California. Serena was born in Naples, Italy, but they were raised in Milan, Italy.  Even though the bisexual/non-binary couple has lived in Milan for four years, they are 100 percent nomads.

So, before they move on to their next destination, we wanted to catch up with them. These content creators spill the tea on their travel style, where their passion to travel came from, a few places they’d recommend LGBTQ+ travelers visit, and what British and Albanian singer is always in rotation on their music playlist when traveling. 

Vacationer Magazine: At what age did you receive your first passport? What was your first trip?

Naudia Yvette Guerrero: I was 10 and my first trip was to Hawaii. 

Serena Sommino:  I was 29, Being European, I didn’t need a passport to travel within Europe. My first trip outside of Europe was to California.

What trip or travel experience sparked your passion for travel? 

Naudia: It was Hawaii because it was the first time, I saw that there were other cultures to explore, other than the ones I saw daily. I am Mexican-American, so I grew up seeing those cultures but in Hawaii, I saw a different culture. I wanted to keep exploring after that. 

Serena: My parents always took me with them to explore various regions of Italy and as I got older, I decided to travel around Europe.

What inspires you to travel?

Honestly, it’s meeting people from different countries and learning about their cultures. There’s something so amazing about immersing yourself in another culture. We don’t just travel to new places for a week or two, we fully immerse ourselves in a new destination.

Please tell us how you identify yourself on the LGBTQIA spectrum. Tell us if how you identify influences the way your travel. If so, how?

Serena: I am non-binary which influences the places I’m willing to travel. It’s easy for straight-passing queer people to travel to destinations like Dubai but for me, it’s not that simple. 

Naudia: I am bisexual and I will admit it is easier for me to travel because I am a cis woman, but I do prefer to travel to places where I can hold my partner’s hand without fearing for my safety.

Is there a travel destination that most queer travelers would think isn’t safe to visit, but you’ve visited and enjoyed it? If so, where?

Serena: Mexico maybe. I mean before we traveled to Mexico, we weren’t sure how safe it would be. 

Naudia: I am Mexican, and my family has never been supportive of the LGBTQ+ community because they are very religious. Mexico was safe and we always felt welcomed in hotels. We create content in public places, and we never felt unsafe holding hands and kissing. 

How long have you been traveling together? What was your first trip together? Would you recommend it to other LGBTQ+ travelers? 

We have been traveling to new places our entire relationship. Our first trip was to California to visit Naudia’s family! We would recommend it to other LGBTQ travelers. 

Was it naturally easy to start traveling with one another? What are the perks of traveling as a couple? 

It was easy to travel since the beginning because we both loved to visit new places and doing it together made it extra special. The perks of traveling as a couple are that you literally get to travel with your best friend. 

How would you describe your travel style in three words? 

Unpredictable, fun, and adventurous.

Would you recommend Milan to LGBTQ+ travelers as a place to add to their travel bucket list? 

Although we don’t live in Milan anymore, we would highly recommend it to LGBTQ+ travelers. Milan has an entire gay neighborhood called Porta Venezia where you can find gay bars and events. The LGBTQ+ nightlife in Milan is incredible. 

What are your favorite places to visit? Why?

Malta because it is very LGBTQ+-friendly, and the people are so kind. Amsterdam because it’s truly a beautiful city filled with history and art. 

What three places are still on your bucket list to visit? Why?

Japan because it’s always been a dream for Serena. Costa Rica because it looks beautiful, and we love visiting tropical places. Argentina because we both would love to explore South America and Argentina is at the top of our list. 

What’s one thing you never forget to pack in your suitcase?

Our tripod! As content creators it’s our most important item!

You’re going on a road trip or a long-haul flight. What singer or band is always on your music playlist?
