As we get ready to board those planes, trains, and automobiles to make the big trip home for the holidays, we are faced with that important question — what queer holiday movies can we download or stream to watch en route to our final destination?
For most people it’s a great opportunity to catch up on some movie watching, so we figured why not put together a list of movies to keep your yuletide gay! It’s a great way to kill some time and hopefully get into the spirit of the season.
Here is our curated list of the fun, solemn, reflective, and profane (compliments of Divine) flicks guaranteed to warm your heart and or tickle your funny bone during the busy travel season.
Christmas on Cherry Lane (2023)
Over the holidays, three couples at different stages of their lives traverse significant life-changing moments at 7 Cherry Lane. One of the couples, gay couple Mike (Jonathan Bennett) and Zain (Vincent Rodriquez III) contemplate expanding their family. This new Hallmark movie can be found on the network of the same name or streaming. Gay actor Bennett has been if other queer holiday movies including The Holiday Sitter (2022), The Christmas House 2: Deck Those Halls (2021), and The Christmas House (2020).
Friends and Family Christmas (2023)
Overwhelmed by Christmas events and a surprise visit from her parents, photographer Dani (Humberly González) asks lawyer Amelia (Ali Liebert) for help. Pretending to date is the perfect solution until real feelings develop.
A Holiday I Do (2023)
Jane (Lindsay Hicks), a single mom and country girl, falls for her ex-husband’s beautiful and sophisticated wedding planner, Sue (Rivkah Reyes). However, she’ll need some Christmas magic to fix the chaos that ensues.
Spoiler Alert (2022)
This movie follows the story of Michael Ausiello (Jim Parsons) and Kit Cowan’s (Ben Aldridge) relationship, which takes a tragic turn when Cowan is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Although it’s not a joyous rom-com, Spoiler Alert is worth checking out. Just have a box of tissues nearby.
A Jenkins Family Christmas (2021)
Although not a queer holiday movie, A Jenkins Family Christmas star a gay couple, Kenny Jenkins (Anthony Chatmon II) and his partner Logan (Derek Chadwick). After burying the patriarch of the Jenkins family, two sisters must make Christmas happen without getting into arguments, but an unexpected twist arrives at the festivities.
Under the Christmas Tree (2021)
Alma (Elise Bauman) and Charlie (Tatiana Jones) cross paths with each other when Charlie finds the perfect tree for the Maine Governor’s Holiday Celebration right in Alma’s backyard.
The Bitch Who Stole Christmas (2021)
In the draggiest Christmas movie ever made, a workaholic big-city fashion journalist is sent to a Christmas-obsessed small town to dig up a story when she finds herself in the middle of cut-throat housewives, a high-stakes “winter ball” competition, and a sinister plot that could destroy Christmas fore-evah! Starring RuPaul and no less than twenty Drag Race alumni, this is a fun, no-frills, sit-back-and-laugh type of film. Highly recommended!
Dashing in December (2020)
When Wyatt Burwall (Peter Porte) finally returns home for the holidays in an effort to convince his mother Deb to sell the family’s Colorado ranch, a romance unexpectedly ignites between Wyatt and their dashing new ranch hand Heath (Juan Pablo Di Pace) Ramos, who dreams of saving the beloved property and the ranch’s magical Winter Wonderland attraction while reawakening the spirit of Christmas in Wyatt’s lonely heart.
The Christmas Setup (2020)
As they enjoy the local holidays together, Hugo (Ben Lewis) and Patrick’s (Blake Lee) attraction to each other is undeniable but as Hugo receives word of a big promotion requiring a move to London, he must decide what is most important to him.
Happiest Season (2020)
Happiest Season was directed by Clea DuVall, who co-wrote the screenplay with Mary Holland. Starring an ensemble cast consisting of Kristen Stewart, Mackenzie Davis, Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza, Dan Levy, Victor Garber, and Mary Steenburgen, the film follows a woman who struggles to admit to her conservative parents that she is a lesbian while she and her girlfriend visit them during Christmas. DuVall has said the film is a semi-autobiographical take on her own experiences with her family.
Single All The Way (2020)
Single All the Way is the story of a gay man (Michael Urie) who convinces his best friend (Philemon Chambers) to pretend to be his boyfriend when he goes home for Christmas, only to be set up on a blind date by his mother (Kathy Najimy). Luke Macfarlane, Barry Bostwick, Jennifer Robertson, and Jennifer Coolidge also star; what more do you need?!
Carol (2015)
Set in New York City during the early 1950s, Carol tells the story of a forbidden affair between an aspiring female photographer and an older woman going through a difficult divorce. This holiday movie stars Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson, Jake Lacy, and Kyle Chandler.
Home for the Holidays (1995)
Directed and produced by Academy Award winner and lesbian icon Jodie Foster, this is THE definitive Thanksgiving movie. After losing her job and having a tawdry affair with her boss, Claudia Larson (Holly Hunter), is heading home for Thanksgiving where we get a good look at the love and dysfunction of a typical American family. Featuring an all-star cast including Anne Bancroft, Robert Downey Jr., Dylan McDermott and Claire Danes, this mid-90s masterpiece is an absolute must-see and features a poignant storyline between Claudia and her gay brother Tommy.
Female Trouble (1974)
Featuring one of the funniest and ‘filthiest’ Christmas scenes of all times, courtesy of the glorious Divine as directed by the Sultan of Sleaze himself, John Waters; watching Female Trouble is guaranteed to land you on Santa’s naughty list. Follow the exploits of Dawn Davenport in one of Water’s most beloved and twisted films of all time.
