Campsites Near Spooky Haunts

LGBTQ+ campers looking for spooky spots to go camping may want to consider this shortlist of outdoor haunts.

What gets you excited about Halloween? Immersing in haunted campgrounds and battlefields, learning about witchcraft, or visiting the nation’s scariest attractions? We get a little help from Sēkr, a crowdsourced mobile app with the largest database of free campsites in the country. Check out this short curated list of a few cool campsites to visit during the Halloween season.

Antietam Creek Campsite (Sharpsburg, Maryland)

The Antietam Creek Campground is located at Mile 69.4 on the C&O Canal Towpath, a few miles south of Shepherdstown on the Maryland side of the Potomac River. And if you’re looking for some outdoor fun with historical landmarks, history buffs and campers should consider visiting Antietam Battlefield, South Mountain Recreation Area, and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. All three places are ideal hiking spots, too! Because this campsite is located near the eponymous battleground, campers have reported seeing ghosts. So, sleep with one eye open to catch sightings of things that go bump in the night.

Dry Fork Recreation Area (New Bloomfield, Missouri)

Located in quiet oak and cedar forest, campers in the central Missouri area near Fulton may want to consider setting up camp at the Dry Fork Recreation Area. In addition to having eight campsites that can accommodate RVs up to 30 feet in length, onsite drinking water, vault toilets, a picnic area, and hitching rails are available here. While you’re here, check out the nearby ruins of a cabin with a placard telling the story of the family that once lived inside, but died from a mysterious illness. A reported account claims that a couple woke to the sounds of an out-of-control campfire and panicked to leave their tent, only to unzip and find complete darkness.

Lakeview Gunnison (Almont, Colorado)

Located on Taylor Park Reservoir in Almont, Lakeview Gunnison Campground is known as a popular spot for fishing, boating, and biking. It also has a number of trails for hiking and off-road adventures such as the Doctor Park Trail, Taylor River Trail, and Taylor Visit Trail. Most campsites have beautiful views of the reservoir and the Sawatch Mountains. A 1.5-hour drive away from the campground, the ghost town of St. Elmo and the natural hot springs in Mt. Princeton are the unique attractions in the area. Campers have reported taking pictures and discovering faint ghost faces looking down at them from the windows of buildings in the background.

White Star (Leadville, Colorado)

Picturesque White Star Campground lies at the foot of Mt. Elbert, Colorado’s highest peak, among fragrant ponderosa pines. The campground provides convenient access to the 2,805-acre Twin Lakes Reservoir and it is located near the Continental Divide Trail, which runs from Canada to Mexico. The Twin Lakes are Colorado’s largest natural glacial lakes, which make sailing and water skiing popular activities here. So, the haunted rumor is that the “Unsinkable Molly Brown” was one famous resident who may still be lurking onsite of the Moyer Mine, which is still open to the public.
